My latest obsession

I might, just might, have a little problem. I can’t stop making Mason-Dixon dishcloths! It doesn’t help that our local variety store (yes, there is a real-deal variety store in these parts, and they have Everything) just restocked their bin of Sugar and Cream. I got a few balls (yeah, right) this morning. I may have crossed a line with the pink and yellow action, but it’s a dishcloth, and it’s supposed to be fun. That’s my story, anyway.

I love a sock sprout, don’t you? It’s so sturdy, and you can already tell what it will be when it’s full-grown.
This is Trekking XXL, color 67. I started it this morning, in that grumpy fog that I’m in when I wake up before 5:00 on my day off. I couldn’t stop thinking about work, and all that must be accomplished before the Big Weekend.

Yes, in two days it will be the Summer Season, and the Summer People will begin to arrive. While everyone else is thinking about those lovely, lazy summer days ahead, I’m gearing up for three months of Extreme Bookselling. I can’t complain, because it’s one of the reasons I have a good job that pays me enough to feed my yarn habit, but it’s hard to shift gears. We adjust our expectations of our daily lives, from how long it will take us to drive anywhere (twice as long as usual, if you’re lucky), to when it makes sense to go to the grocery store (definitely not Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning). At the bookstore I need to be ready for anything, try to predict what people will be asking for, and steel myself and my staff for the inevitable rude behavior of people who should know better.

So I’m counting onTrekking socks and Mason-Dixon dishcloths and every other bit of knitting I have on needles or in my head to save my sanity. I just might have to join Norma and Margene’s Trek Along, and the Mason-Dixon KAL too, if all I’m wanting to be doing is making those socks and dishcloths! Oh, we’ll see.

Hey, Sandy! This one’s for you! Today was a fabulous day!

  1. oh dear – I feel that the washrag addiction is all my fault – if ONLY I hadn’t shown you mine…and the really sad thing is I haven’t knit much at all the past week and have not done any more washrags…I’ve been down and out between migraines and stomach issues. AND I have to go shopping tomorrow morning – before all the craziness starts. At least for the essentials like milk for coffee and bread and soda – if for nothing else.

  2. I forgot — they got all those new colors in — I may have to take a ride to check them out. You did mean the 5 and 10 right??

  5. I have GOT to get the Mason-Dixon book. You remind me that it will soon be “summer season” here and I too avoid going into town on the weekends or on any afternoon of the week. We live in a small town that bursts at the seams in the summer and it requires careful planning to avoid getting caught in the swarm of pedestrians and traffic late on a Friday afternoon. I think any town that can be described as “quaint” suffers this fate.

  6. Our summer seasons are similar – all the vacation people and the traffic in a town so small you’d miss it if you sneezed – and we have Summer Reading Club to boot. But one good thing happens – no more school busses! We’re next door to the elementary school and the wreck havoc with driving twice a day. I always feel so spacious when I go to work in summer – even if I know the day will be hectic.Happy Maine Weekend to you

  7. What great pics! Sock sprout? You are so funny.I lived in Lake Tahoe for a couple of years way back when. Winter and summer were big tourist seasons, so instead of snuggling in next to the fire in winter, or lying around on the beach in the summer, most of the residents had to work much harder than during the “shoulder seasons” – always loved that expression. Since I worked at the community college library, my job didn’t change that much. I skiied and hung out at the beach with the tourists, complained to my fellow Tahoe-ites about the congestion and the low common denominator of people on vacation.Do you own a bookstore?

  8. I love your washrags — I think I’ll be knitting one real soon. “Sock Sprout” is classic! Good luck with your summer season — be sure to keep knitting to help reduce the stress.
