A little consolation

Happy Easter, or whatever!

It’s been a long week — busy at work, busy at home. And for the first time in about eight years, I have to work today. The Schedule Goddess (that would be me) tried, but she saw no other way. How could I ask my coworker with the young child to come in today, when her son was up and dyeing Easter eggs with his grandmother when she left for work yesterday?

So the two of us who will be at the store today will be ready. You know, in case someone needs a magazine or something. Or The Velveteen Rabbit. We’ll close in time to get to the wonderful dinners that will have been prepared without our hanging out in the kitchen with our families and friends. They’ll be happy to see us when we get there, tell us they love us, and then sit us down to a delicious meal and lots of fun. That’s how I’m consoling myself, anyway.

Peaceful, sweet and refreshing. The clutterless state of this side of my apartment is a joy (you won’t be seeing any panoramic shots, for good reason). And as I look at this picture it comes to me: everything in it has to do with my friend K. The Real Reeves wheel. The amazing Shaker chair, built by K and R, and on permanent (I suppose) loan. Even the little footstool was found when we were on an antique store crawl on the Eastern Shore. It’s not a shrine, I swear. It just demonstrates that I hang out with people who have excellent taste!

I do knit. Really, I do. I have so many socks going on right now that I don’t know where to turn, but once the pair I’m knitting on a deadline is finished I might just cast on for a Backyard Leaves scarf. I have some pretty geen yarn that just might do.

  1. Working on a holiday is different, after many, many years in the food industry I became used to working when everyone else was relaxing. But the day was different. As you said, they may come in for an emergency bunny book! We’re somewhere in Virginia this morning, about 500 miles from home (loving this GPS thing – my Little One calls it the PPS!) But none of us brought a winter jacket, just long pants and sweatshirts and it was 29 last night! I’ve only managed to knit in the car on the vacation, it’s been such a treat. Your spinning corner looks like a peaceful oasis, just calling for you to sit and create. I’m coming home from my vacation with such inspiration to empty my home and lose some weight. And I have some knitting ideas as well! See you soon!

  2. Don’t worry – I’m saving the entire dinner preparation for when you get here. I know you’ll want to stand around some more after work.No – we will welcome you with love and just be glad that you are here with us – and you can sit down as soon as you get here. And you can know you did a wonderful thing for your co-worker with the little boy.

  5. Thank you for reminding me of the wonderful Backyard Leaves pattern! I just acquired some Habu cashmere in a brownie-green that needs to be leaves! It’s laceweight, but I’ll experiment.Carol in Oregon

  9. sigh. What a lovely spinning corner. And who cares about the 3 other corners.I worked saturday – even though it snowed – and was amazed how many people wanted emergency Easter books. Something like 60 people in 6 hours. sheesh! but I never mind working Saturdays.missing you so muchB
